Heading out to Orlando to see my man for the day :) I’m meeting his dad’s mom for the first time. Factoid: she used to be in the Black Panthers. I’m not going to lie——I’m a little nervous! From everything I’ve heard she’s quite the  character and a very intense woman. I really want to make a good impression and start things off right with her. ...

Whoops.
My dad got me a Kindle Fire for Christmas, and it’s awesome. (I’m a die-hard paper book lover, and I’m still in love with it.) I guess it’s a little too awesome though… Dad: “Katie, I see you downloaded 156 free books today.” Me: “Errr…..how did you know?” Dad: “I got an e-mail notification for every single one of them.” ...

Luxuries are not the root of happiness, promise.
This Christmas I received a gift I never thought possible—-I got to spend it with a brother I never really knew until this year. It was our very first Christmas together. And because my mom moved back to Tampa, I got to see my dad, mom, and two of my brothers all in the same day. Words really can’t describe how much this Christmas meant to me. I haven’t felt this much like part...

Just sent off my first letter to Madobi. I seriously cannot wait to hear back. Odd, I have copious amounts of patience for everything else in life except hearing back about things or getting things in the mail. Currently waiting on Winthrop-King scholarship announcements and Madobi’s letter. Gosh I love that girl already :)

My latest scheme to vote with my dollar.
I’ve resolved to buy the majority of gifts that I buy in the future from impovershed women around the world. For example, one Christmas gift I bought this year was a handpainted tote bag made by survivors of sex trafficking in Calcutta. There are many many organizations that sell a variety of products hand-made by impovershed women around the globe, and I really think this is a better way to...

Shelfari has got to be one of my favorite websites...
I don’t even care if it’s a ploy by Amazon to get you to buy books from them. www.shelfari.com Start your bookcase and let me know when you have so I can follow it! :)

An Appeal to Bibliophages and Literature Lovers
Finished reading the Hunger Games in a day (partly because I had to walk a few miles and sit with my defunct car until AAA came). Wasn’t expecting much more than an entertaining fantasy/sci-fi novel, but wanted to see what the hype was about and ended up being surprised by the thought-provoking and eye-opening allegory it contained about the disparity in wealth and power between countries of...

A Christmas Edition of: That Awkward Moment...
My resident just texted me: “That awkward moment when Christmas Shoes is on the radio and then you come to a stop light and both you and the girl in the car next to you are crying…” Hahahaha, I love my residents <3
